a mio parere il gruppo alt-rock piu furbo degli ultimi anni.
Melodie pazzeske, atmosfeta surreale....

FANTASTICI!!!

I Muse sono un trio di Tinighmonth, Inghilterra, esploso negli ultimi due anni grazie a un sound peculiare, che combina tenere melodie vocali, chitarre al vetriolo e suggestive atmosfere elettroniche. Una formula che rivitalizza il pop anemico dei Radiohead con una verve hardcore presa in prestito da band come Sonic Youth, Nirvana e Rage Against The Machine.

La band nasce nel 1999 dall’incontro tra Matthew Bellamy (voce, chitarra e pianoforte), Dominic Howard (batteria) e Chris Wolstenholme (basso e cori). E nello stesso anno pubblica l’album Showbiz (Mushroom Records/Spingo) che conquista i favori del pubblico dell’indie-rock (oltre mezzo milione di copie vendute) e diversi premi della critica: “Brand New Band 2000” all’NME Carling Premier Awards, nomination come best band e best album ai Q Awards, best band e best live act ai Kerrang Awards. Sulla band si concentrano le attenzioni di diverse etichette internazionali, tra cui la Maverick di Madonna che li ingaggia negli Stati Uniti.



La critica li consacra subito come gli gli eredi del guitar-sound, ormai disperso in divagazioni elettroniche, dei Radiohead. Ma c’è anche chi li accosta al cantautorato poetico e intimista di Jeff Buckley. Eppure per Matthew Bellamy, leader della band, le influenze dei Muse sono completamente diverse: “Adoriamo i Rage Against The Machine e i Primus, siamo cresciuti ascoltando band alternative come Sonic Youth e Dinosaur Jr.”. Influenze già percepibili in brani ambiziosi come “Fillip” e (soprattutto) “Sunburn”, che travalicano i confini dell’agonizzante Britpop di fine anni ’90. E di energia hardcore vibrano anche le performance live del gruppo, che sul palco scatena un uragano di suoni elettrici: “Ci presentiamo soli – racconta Bellamy - con i nostri strumenti, e chi ci ha visto può garantire che abbiamo l’energia di un’intera orchestra”. E’ proprio dal vivo, in effetti, che i Muse riescono ad essere più trascinanti, come conferma il successo della loro recente tournée italiana, che ha registrato sempre il tutto esaurito.



Ma l’etichetta Britpop, per i Muse, è difficile da cancellare. E c’è già chi ironizza su di loro come “cloni” dei Radiohead. "La missione dei Muse è suonare come un ibrido geneticamente modificato di Queen, Jeff Buckley e Radiohead. Ci sono riusciti?”, ironizza New Musical Express. E così Bellamy e soci decidono di accentuare l’anima rock del loro suono. Dichiarano apertamente di volersi rifare soprattutto al chitarrismo doc, da Jimi Hendrix ai Nine Inch Nails, passando per i Police e i Nirvana. E al solito produttore John Leckie (Radiohead, Stone Roses) decidono di affiancare David Bottrill, già con A Perfect Circle, Tool, Deus. La svolta si consuma in un tour americano che vede i Muse come gruppo spalla prima di Pavement e Flaming Lips, e poi dei Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bellamy, chitarra elettrica alla mano, si esibisce in performance infuocate che culminano spesso con il sacrificio degli strumenti di hendrixiana memoria.



Da questa svolta chitarristica nasce il nuovo album Origin Of Symmetry, preceduto dal robusto singolo “Plug In Baby”. Registrato negli studi Real World di Peter Gabriel a Bath e nello studio galleggiante sul Tamigi di proprietà dei Pink Floyd, è un album rabbioso e romantico al tempo stesso, che conferma il talento della band britannica. L’umore malinconico di brani come “New Born” (“L’amarezza cresce dentro/ come un neonato/ quando hai visto troppo e troppo presto”), “Darkshines” e “Citizen Erased” aggiorna al Duemila lo spleen decadente di Morrissey. E tutto il disco mette in mostra un sound fattosi ora più corposo e variegato, con tinte elettroniche metalliche e spaziali. Lo stesso NME, che nel frattempo li ha consacrati “band rivelazione del 2000”, scrive ora di loro: “I Muse sono riusciti a trasformare le loro nevrosi di provincia in un’idea universale”.

Il successo di Origin of Symmetry riporta alla luce anche uno dei primi lavori della band: l’interessante Ep Muscle Museum, che mette in evidenza il debito dei Muse verso il prog-romantic degli Ultravox di “Quartet”. Ormai la stampa britannica punta chiaramente su di loro, insieme ai Belle and Sebastian, come band di punta della scena indie rock. Ma Bellamy resta diffidente sui pericoli dello show business: “Ci sono molti uomini d’affari che spremono gli artisti e basta. In Gran Bretagna, poi, la stampa esagera sempre: ora ti esalta e ora ti distrugge. Fino a poco fa non venivamo presi sul serio, forse perché eravamo troppo giovani, ora le cose stanno cambiando”. Parola del nuovo astro nascente del rock britannico. Un ragazzo del 1978 che dice di identificarsi in “Blue Valentine” di Tom Waits e di amare oltre ogni limite il personaggio di Al Pacino nel “Padrino”.



I Muse tornano nel 2002 con la doppia antologia Hullabaloo Soundtrack che raccoglie B sides degli inizi carriera (marzo 1999-ottobre 2001) più un estratto da un concerto a Parigi.



Nel 2003 i Muse tornano con Absolution, per un ennesimo successo di pubblico, che però delude in buona parte le aspettative della critica.

GRANDE!!! finalmente qualcuno che se ne intende!

Tra le tantissime band che hanno attraversato l'Italia dall'inizio dell'estate 2004, i Muse hanno lasciato un segno molto profondo. Epici e concreti allo stesso tempo, giovanissimi eppure seri e professionali, capaci di arricchire con un concerto dal tiro mozzafiato il patrimonio di emozioni diffuso nel mondo con i loro album. Tre dal 1999 ad oggi, l'ultimo dei quali, Absolution, meritevole di un approfondimento concettuale, andando oltre la bellezza di canzoni in grado di irretire i pubblicitari nonostante testi obliqui e inquieti.

Per i Muse, un'estate da ricordare, nel bene e nel male, un inseguimento emozionale che regala gioie senza risparmiare i dolori. Essere assoldati dai Cure per il "Curiosa Tour" negli Usa è consacrazione più credibile di qualsiasi recensione positiva. Notizia seguita dalla morte del padre del batterista Dominic Howard, Bill, avvenuta il 28 giugno al festival di Glastonbury, poco dopo il set dei Muse. Lutto che aveva costretto la band ad annullare il ritorno in Italia per un concerto a Bergamo.

INTERVISTA

Time Passages: come siete cambiati dal 1999 ad oggi?
Matthew Bellamy: Le cose di cui abbiamo parlato attraverso la nostra musica sono ovviamente cambiate nel corso del tempo. All'inizio riguardavano le ansie tipiche dei teenager, ora invece le tematiche sono molto più ampie.

Dominic Howard: Siamo cambiati molto, siamo cresciuti ed è mutato il nostro modo di pensare e fare musica. Anche il contenuto delle canzoni è cambiato: siamo diventati più espressivi e non abbiamo più paura di esprimere idee e di discuterne. Il mondo è cambiato drasticamente, e questo ha avuto un impatto sulla vita di tutti, noi compresi. Era inevitabile che la nostra musica rispecchiasse la nostra visione del mondo.

Chris Wolstenholme: Tutto cambia tra i 16 e i 25 anni. Cambia il modo in cui vedi le cose, cambia il modo in cui le "senti". Tutto questo influenza senz'altro il modo in cui suoni e tutto quello di cui canti.

Chi sono i Muse sul palco?
Dominic: Quando suoniamo dal vivo siamo onesti da diversi punti di vista: ognuno di noi mostra la sua personalità, ha la possibilità di sentirsi veramente "libero" e di mostrarsi come non farebbe nella vita di tutti i giorni. Nel corso del tempo il nostro modo di suonare dal vivo è cambiato: all'inizio eravamo molto introversi, difficilmente ci aprivamo verso il pubblico. Ora è diverso, canzone dopo canzone riusciamo a comunicare sempre di più con chi ci guarda.

Matthew: All'inizio la nostra attenzione era focalizzata sulla musica che facevamo. Eravamo tutti e tre concentrati sul trovare le giuste emozioni, il giusto feeling per suonare. Con il passare del tempo ci siamo aperti di più verso il pubblico: soprattutto alla fine dei concerti cerchiamo di "abbracciare" l'audience che abbiamo davanti, di parlare con la gente.

Siete tornati a suonare negli Usa, dove avete avuto ottimi riscontri. Merito solo della musica o anche del fatto che il mood delle vostre canzoni colpisce gli americani in questo momento storico?
Dominic: Siamo stati lontani dagli Usa per quattro anni per dei problemi con l'album Origin Of Simmetry, che lì non era ancora uscito. E' stato un peccato, ce ne siamo accorti ora che ci siamo tornati: la gente ha reagito ai nostri concerti in un modo stupendo. Abbiamo avuto sold-out suonando in posti con una capienza massima che andava dalle 500 alle 1500 persone, molto più piccoli di quelli a cui siamo abituati in Europa. Ma è stato bello vedere la gente reagire in quel modo: cantare le canzoni a memoria, saltare con Mat e trovare quel rumoroso feeling con una band che molti in pratica vedevano dal vivo per la prima volta.

Matthew: Penso che gli americani, avendo a che fare con un governo conservatore, siano più aperti verso ogni tipo di arte. E' stato così negli anni Sessanta, durante il Vietnam, quando la gente era contro la guerra e sperimentava qualsiasi tipo di musica e di arte in genere. Attualmente credo che gli Usa siano più aperti verso la musica internazionale di quanto lo fossero negli anni Novanta ad esempio, quando erano concentrati unicamente sul rock americano.

Absolution: una condanna o un avvertimento?
Matthew: L'assoluzione di cui parliamo è più una provocazione che un avvertimento. Nel primo album, Showbiz, parlavamo di un tempo che stava per finire, sia al livello personale sia per il mondo esterno. Absolution, per quanto possa sembrare pessimista, è invece un album ottimista. Io almeno lo considero tale. Canzoni come Butterflies And Hurricanes, Blackout e Time Is Running Out sono positivi. Time Is Running Out ad esempio dice appunto che "il tempo sta per finire", non che è scaduto. C'è ancora speranza, dunque, c'è ancora un motivo per continuare a lottare.

Dominic: Ci sono canzoni positive, come Butterflies And Hurricanes, che contrastano con altre più negative, come Apocalypse Please. E comunque il filo conduttore di Absolution è un senso di positività, di speranza, la volontà di creare la migliore situazione possibile anche se tutt'intorno ci sono cose terribili.

La copertina dell'album è stata ideata da Storm Thorgerson, leggendario artista grafico autore delle più celebri cover dei Pink Floyd...
Dominic: Siamo suoi fan. Ci piacciono le sue fotografie, così surreali. Eravamo in cerca di un'idea per la nostra copertina e ci siamo imbattuti nel suo sito web e in tutto quello che aveva fatto per i Pink Floyd. L'abbiamo contattato e lui ci ha subito esposto qualche idea. Mi piace il modo in cui lavora: per lui l'importante è che tutto sia reale e che nulla sia ricreato al computer. Ogni foto che scatta quindi è unica e deve essere "buona", perché non verrà ritoccata.

Test psicologico: sulla copertina di Absolution, un uomo e una bambina guardano verso il cielo, circondati da ombre di uomini volanti proiettate sulla terra. Quegli esseri stanno volando o precipitando?
Matthew: Nel sito di Storm abbiamo scovato un disegno simile all'immagine che poi sarebbe diventata la nostra copertina. Era un'idea che non aveva mai concretizzato, con tutte quelle ombre di persone che cadevano dal cielo. Ne abbiamo parlato al bar, davanti a un drink, e abbiamo deciso di realizzarla. Quando l'abbiamo fatto non avevamo ben in mente il suo significato. Penso che ognuno si sia fatto la propria idea. Io interpreto quelle ombre come anime chiamate a sé da Dio. L'uomo che le osserva da terra ha quell'aria contrariata perché si chiede: perché non ha scelto anche me?

Dominic: Per me sono persone in volo, non stanno precipitando. Sono anime che stanno lasciando la Terra nel giorno del giudizio. E sono d'accordo con Mat: l'uomo si chiede "perché non io?".

I Muse sono un gruppo che ho conosciuto da poco...ma nello stesso tempo questo poco è bastato x farmeli apprezzare!!!

Comunque, per farti capire chi sono: hai presente la pubblicità della LANCIA Y? quella con lo sfondo giallino e la faccina stilizzata in nero che gioca con la macchina? ecco, la colonna sonora è TIME IS RUNNING OUT dei Muse, dell'ultimo album ABSOLUTION... uno dei piu belli, a mio parere.
